John Carroll's ouster from Survivor 4 Marquesas
dispelled once and for all any lingering
doubts as to Mark Burnett's entertainment
credentials, and demonstrated conclusively
that a little ingenuity in devising new
twists on an old game will keep it
ever-fresh and continually fascinating.
Given a hundred years to do nothing but
stare at a blank wall and think creatively,
we here at SurvivorHunks doubt very
seriously whether we could ever have
conjured up an
immunity challenge that would have affected the course of the game as vividly as
the one that led to John's elimination at
Tribal Council.
Along with John we discovered the potential downside to
joining an alliance, we witnessed a fatal
backlash from the non-aligned, and noted
that personal assurances even from the likes
of a Judge can be fluid and temporary.
Seasons one and
three of Survivor featured openly gay
male contestants, meaning John's
participation didn't break new ground.
However only
Richard Hatch took home the grand prize, so
whether one's lifestyle is a help or
hindrance remains an open question.
