If ever we needed proof of the genius
behind Mark Burnett's game, the
surprisingly early elimination of Hunter
Ellis in the Marquesas was it. Not
only is the race not always won by the
fleet, nor victory assured the strong, but
gamesmanship itself reigns king over any
combination of survival skills and rugged
determination. It's no small point
that the words 'outwit' and 'outplay'
appear at the top of the Survivor
logo.
Not since
Joel Klug bit the dust in Malaysia on Survivor
1 has so able a contestant as Hunter
been ousted before his time. But
when a coven of tribal mates bands
together, unless you're in it you're
powerless to control your fate.
Allegiance matters, alliances rule, and
everything else gets you a free trip back
to civilization.
The memories of
Hunter we'll carry forth revolve around
the last impressions he offered: the
priceless look of incredulity on his face
when he first saw his name on a ballot,
and the stinging diatribe that comprised his
final words shortly thereafter.
Somehow we get the feeling that Hunter
isn't very accustomed to losing. . .
