When Dirk Been went to Malaysia he took
with him a luxury item that made his
fellow contestants uneasy, and which
ultimately proved to be his undoing.
It was his Bible, which he spent reading
hour after hour day after day. Not
that being religious is a sin because it
isn't, but when one's religion makes
others uncomfortable ~ others who hold
your fate in their hands ~ it's probably a
good idea to make your Bible-reading less
of a spectacle.
What was
particularly surprising about Dirk's
fairly early departure from Survivor
was that he was easily the best athlete of
his tribe. In a game where immunity
and reward challenges are generally
physical competitions of one sort or
another, a cardinal rule should be to hold
onto your more athletic members at all
costs. Apparently though, when that
athleticism comes with a Bible tucked
under one arm, cardinal rules go right out
the window.
So if Dirk could
go back in time and do it all over again
would he leave his Bible home?
Actually we rather doubt it.
