By-all-appearances Burton Roberts of
Survivor 7 Pearl Islands was a strong,
willing, well-qualified contestant, who
by-all-rights ought to have contested far
into the game. And he did, thanks to a
surprising twist that saw him ~ along with
scoutmaster Lillian Morris ~ voted back in just after the tribes merges.
The two became known as the 'outcasts' ~ and
for Burton's part, he ultimately became the first
castaway in Survivor history
to be voted out twice.
Interestingly enough, watching both of Burton's
ousters during the 4th and 13th episodes shed
some light on one of Survivor's
enduring mysteries. Want to know why a
woman has reached every 'final twosome' except one? Want to
know why female castaways have won the
million bucks three
times in Survivor's first six
versions? It's because as early as the
fourth Tribal Council, the women were already
scheming to maintain a gender balance, if
not to achieve gender superiority. And
thinking back to the Marquesas, to Thailand,
and to the Amazon, certain wily women were
gender-scheming even earlier than that.
None of which helped Burton one bit. Once the
Pearl Island females found their common
ground, he was gone (again). Yet for
the record, he returned home with a
brand-spanking new GMC Envoy, which he
captured in a reward challenge. Not
exactly the world's worst consolation prize
for finishing fifth,
eh?
